ROMANCE & RUFFLES PAR EXCELLENCE

EVEN THOUGH the sun had long set over the horizon and the social birds were out of their gilded nests, thronging the front row but at Suneet Varma's couture showing on Thursday night, it was a romantic full moon that shone brightly against the backdrop of the ramp as Suneet's models sashayed down an elaborately designed runway in sinfully romantic creations.

Layer after romantic layer, tens of thousands of ruffles, a zillion sequins sparkling in the arc lights and blossoms from the garden of Eden aptly defined Varma's collection, inspired by William Shakespeare's A MID SUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM.

So elaborate was the set and stage that Suneet even had a lilly pond right in the center of the ramp. Too bad he didn't have some lovely mermaids cavorting around it in jeweled corsets and fish tails....but it's something to think about for his next showing.

Suneet seemed to have pulled out all stops as he showed a line of sarees, gowns and dresses - all accessorised with floral emroidered leggings and bags by Judith Leiber.

The highlight of the show was ex supermodel Madhu Sapre, who walked his ramp in sinfully elegant sarees. Clearly, this is one girl who never should have retired and we hope to see much more of her during the HDIL sponsored India Couture Week.

Our verdict: Sublime!
